I met Billy during an art residency in Colombia. He brought an energy that I really needed at the time. I was grieving the loss of my friend and having Billy there lifted me up probably more than he knew. When he asked me to contribute something to his show, I was thrilled. My art is heavily connected to music and I was excited to incorporate his into my work. I immediately felt connected to the title and theme of the show. I started exploring the same themes in my work around the time I met Billy.

I listened to Billy’s songs for this show while I painted. Some of the songs were made while we were living together in Colombia. One is called Pandi and brings back memories of hiking up the mountain to get to town. Billy and I decided painting on vinyl records would be perfect for the show. Some of the other materials I used came from Colombia. I was not only influenced by Billy’s sample choices but also by the art of sampling. I felt like I was sampling old techniques and materials in these paintings. After each layer, I would tape what I liked and paint over the rest, which reminded me of musicians doing different takes in the studio. Painting over things also reminds me of impermanence. I worked on these paintings at the same time so they’re all connected. Things felt a little clearer when I was making them. I’m super grateful that they were part of Billy’s show.
